FIELDHOUSE OF MY BRAIN

Hurry back, Becks

So David Beckham is eager to return to the Los Angeles Galaxy, is he?

Beckham, who talked to mls.net about resuming his state-side career, is on holiday until July but has been keeping up with the fixtures and such and thinks he can make a seemless addition to the Galaxy, which has won only once this season against one loss and nine draws.

As I’ve written before here, I think Beckham should be allowed to do as he wishes. Suit up for England at every opportunity? Absolutely. Spend the winter playing with European superclub AC Milan? Sure. Come back to the Galaxy only after he’s rested his 36-year-old bones for a month? Be my guest.

The man is probably the most famous soccer player to ever lace up boots and play on a pitch. Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi might be bigger names now, but is either more marketable? Hardly. Ronaldo is vain in the vein of A-Rod and Messi is short like your little sister.

There’s no denying Beckham is an icon in a sport struggling to keep pace with the U.S.’s Big Four (Poker, Alcohol, Tobacco, Fire arms) and should therefore be afforded every allowance to ensure he continues to promote and play for a U.S. club on U.S. soil.

His very presence sells tickets, merchandise and televion rights and that cannot be ignored, no matter his effectiveness on the pitch. His detractors have every right to judge his performance and that of his team but the fact remains that Beckham is the biggest and best thing to happen to U.S. club soccer since Pele’ and therefore should be viewed in that light.

So hurry back, Becks. You might not be the player you once were but you still make the MLS more palatable to soccer/futbol fans hungover from the delights of another great European season.
