Looks like Helio Castroneves, one of the most charismatic athletes of his generation, is facing federal charges of tax evasion in the State of Florida and could serve a maximum of 35 years if convicted.
Castroneves, a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, is being charged with what essentially looks like money laundering. It all seems very sordid and deceptive. His sister did this, his business manager did that. And poor Helio, according to his lawyer, was completely unaware.
Well, I’ve met Helio Castroneves and he’s WAY too smart to NOT know where his money was going. He’s a world-class auto racer from Brazil. You don’t think he got to the winner’s circle at Indy by the seat of his pantalones? He’s very intelligent. Maybe the smartest athlete I’ve ever interviewed. And not only does he know he’s smart, he’s unabashedly handsome and has the world at his fingertips. Or at least he thought he did.
The guy also won a little show called “Dancing With The Stars,” so you know he has moves.
I’m anxious to see if he can dance his way out of this one.
